Requested rename of protected file

[edit]

There is a rename request at File:April 2026 White House 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting suspect entering hotel.webm. The page is protected and I can't perform the move. I was thinking of moving it to File:CCTV footage of the April 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting suspect entering the secure area near the ballroom.webm. A more descriptive name that also removes what appears to be a redundancy in the current name. If anyone has a better choice for the name, plz do suggest and an admin is requested to carry this out. If someone wants to shorten my version, we can use WH instead of White House. That would do it by a bit. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 17:22, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Shaan Sengupta: Good name suggestion. For the protection: The file is protected on zhWP. That means CommonsDelinker will not change filenames in that language versions. The best is, just wait some days, as soon as the file has disappeared from the main page of zhWP. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:02, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hospiceaastha's continued advertisement/promotional uploads

[edit]

Hospiceaastha (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information)
Continues to upload promotional/advertisement images which are clearly out of project scope despite warning. Was warned at Revision #674900214 by @Achim55 to which they replied Dear this is not advertisement these are achievements at Revision #675050300. We are not a platform to hosts someone's achievements. The user clearly doesn't understand the scope of this project. I will start a mass DR if that's needed bcoz we may keep some images that have prominent Indian politicians like Yogi Adityanath and Anandiben Patel. There have been previous deletions too for same/other reasons. I am knowingly not informing the user bcoz of the reply I have highlighted above. If someone still wants, plz do so. Shaan SenguptaTalk 05:17, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Shaan Sengupta: Plenty of the images do seem to have an educational value and must be kept. The revision you supplied is from 2022. I think a warning should suffice that one should not upload images that seemingly come across as promotion of the drives run by a certain hospital. signed, Aafi (talk) 06:38, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
but I see plenty of unattended warnings. signed, Aafi (talk) 06:39, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Images with prominent politicians, as I said can be kept, or others which show some significant event. There were/are uploads of charity, patient care, etc which hold no educational value here. The doctor and the hospital have an article on enwiki, so we can keep images which can be of some use there. Rest, I don't see much value. And yes the revision link is old but was used only to show approach to the project and the thinking. Shaan SenguptaTalk 06:46, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Very few images are actually in use. While I realise that the subject is notable I don't think he's that notable. This feel like using the project as a web host as much as anything. Herby talk thyme 07:07, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. There are many more that need to be deleted. The pattern of uploads seen here is for social media not Commons. Uploading images of every meet and events at the organisation, you do this on social media. Shaan SenguptaTalk 07:23, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
We now have more images 1, 2 and 3 possibly celebrating/highlighting his son's success in examinations. These uploads came after I warned them with {{No selfies}}. The user clearly didn't get the message that his ain't a personal web host. Moving closer to NOTHERE. Shaan SenguptaTalk 11:10, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've started the ball rolling and deleted the latest uploads. To me this is a vanity project given the titles of the images. Sure some are definitely keepable but even the categories are a bit random at times and the main personal category should go too. Much of this is simply personal web hosting. Thanks for the report. Remaining images review: IMO they may be either out of scope or copyright violations. I also note that this user is blocked indef. on English Wikipedia. Yann (talk) 15:55, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to Jeff G. for the meta report and Barras for the global lock. Now that the further damage is stopped, I would really appreciate some admin taking care of the rest of problematic uploads. Shaan SenguptaTalk 02:57, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

IPBlock-exempt

[edit]

I apologize in advance if I’ve submitted this request in the wrong place, but I couldn’t find a dedicated page for requesting IP block exemptions on Wikimedia Commons, so I’m posting it here.

Due to the increasing number of internet restrictions in Russia, particularly in recent times and apparently related to the blocking of Telegram, I have been experiencing unstable connections to Wikipedia, Commons, and other related projects at various times of the day. At times, between a quarter and half of all packets are lost, making the sites practically unusable. Since many major platforms and services (such as YouTube, Twitter, and Discord) are currently blocked, I have to constantly switch between my regular IP connection and a VPN in order to edit Commons, which is highly inconvenient. If necessary, I can provide traceroute results to the Commons servers to help illustrate the issue. I would also like to note that I already have the IP block exemption flag on the Wikidata, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Russian Wikipedia, and Russian Wikinews. In light of this, I kindly request that the IP block exemption flag be granted to my account. Mitte27 (talk) 04:40, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Redmin making bot edits

[edit]

Redmin (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log) is making bot edits, not following COM:BOT that requires approval, a seperate account and a rate (edit) limit. Redmin is currently breaking all of those and flooding everyone's watchlists.

I have requested them to stop but clearly the account has been left unattended (see the contrib log), as the account continues to make mass bot edits. Bidgee (talk) 10:36, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

User notified Bidgee (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello, no, I am actually running a modified version of AC/DC instead. (My fork allows recursively getting category members of any subcategories of a chosen category, which has been very helpful in adding P180 statements.) Using JavaScript tools to make large numbers of edits is not against COM:BOT at all, rather it explicitly states it is allowed. Regarding my 'account [being] left unattended', I had merely loaded a large number of files to be edited, and stepped away from the computer for some time.
@Bidgee, please remember to assume good faith instead of going around casting aspersions from the next time around.
Thank you. Redmin (talk) 11:18, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Can you please reduce the amount of edits you make, flooding watchlists with no way of hiding it using filters, makes it hard to follow my watchlist. Your actions are bot like! As per Bot speed "A bot carrying out non-urgent tasks should not edit more frequently than once every 5 seconds. Bots carrying out urgent tasks, such as reverting vandalism, may edit faster. Unflagged bots should edit more slowly than flagged bots as their edits are visible in watchlists, and high-speed editing will swamp other users' lists.".
Please respect your fellow Commons contributors. Bidgee (talk) 11:27, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I could make it so that the change tag for AC/DC is added to these edits but that would not be technically correct, and might cause people to complain to Lucas Werkmeister about supposed bugs (like the high number of edits, which would not be possible with AC/DC) instead of myself. I would gladly add a different edit tag if a suitable tag were to be created by the admins though. Regarding the amount of edits, how do you expect a human to proceed? If I were a bot, I could just schedule these and process them over time but since I am a human volunteer, I am just going to edit when I am able to! And you keep pointing me to COM:BOT but I want my fellow contributors to be able to see and scrutinize my edits precisely because I am a human who respects them! Please try to understand that these edits are not maintenance work but content addition. Can you please check if 'muting' me from Special:Preferences helps? Even with the current edit rate (which I think from experience is slower than edits made with standard AC/DC where I would notice 75 edits would be made per minute usually, likely because of the much bigger number of files that have to be processed), it took nearly two hours to edit just under 5800 files. Redmin (talk) 11:49, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you have to edit a lot of pages for sustained period, it is usually best to get a bot account set up and get approved — you get better API treatment (Action API rate limit, CDN rate limit,…), and less headache like this. — regards, Revi 13:44, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would honestly rather not have to make a new approval request every time I decide I want to make, due to the lack of a better word, a new kind of edit. That being said, the prospect of higher API rate limits is an attractive one indeed… Redmin (talk) 16:46, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Redmin, dear Lord please use the AC/DC ToolSDC changed suggested tag per Schlurcher tag. I don't care if it's technically correct or not, you can clarify in the edit summary if needed. I'm maxed-out looking at 500 watchlist entries and using ShushChanges and it's still not enough: I can't see any changes before 9:03 today. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:47, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
There is the Tag ToolSDC for these type of edits. Please use that one. --Schlurcher (talk) 16:07, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
✓ Done. Thanks for pointing that out. Hopefully this solves the problem with watchlists getting flooded. Redmin (talk) 16:38, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
More importantly for many of these files like File:İstanbul 154.jpg depicts (P180): Süleymaniye Mosque is wrong it should be location of creation (P1071) REAL 💬 14:26, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Is this documented somewhere? I do not see any usage example for media on P1071. Wikidata’s modeling docs help avoid confusion like this but I have not found any equivalent for SDC. Redmin (talk) 16:42, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Erik Baas, why did you add rotate to File:Görsel Çalışma Amasya.png? If justified, you need also to add the degree of required rotation. --Túrelio (talk) 10:24, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
No. {{Rotate}} says "Please add the parameters |degree=90/180/270 (clockwise) if you want SteinsplitterBot to automatically rotate this image", whih is not what I want. - Erik Baas (talk) 10:40, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
